Data sources
Open data and licences
Air Virtua is built on open, publicly available datasets. The sources and their licence terms are listed below. We keep a derived database for in-game search and import and do not republish the raw dumps.
Airports — OurAirports
A worldwide airport reference (ICAO/IATA codes, coordinates, cities). Source: ourairports.com/data. The data has been dedicated to the public domain.
Aircraft types — ICAO Doc 8643
The reference of aircraft type designators (ICAO Aircraft Type Designators, Doc 8643). Used as the type catalogue for fleets and for matching real-world routes.
Real-world routes — OpenFlights
The route network of the world's airlines (a 2014 snapshot). Source: openflights.org/data. The data is distributed under the Open Database License (ODbL) 1.0. We provide the required OpenFlights attribution and use the data in derived form (route search and import inside the game).
Real-world routes — US DOT BTS T-100 Segment
Monthly flight-segment statistics for US carriers and foreign carriers flying to and from the US (1990–2026), including aircraft type. Source: transtats.bts.gov (Bureau of Transportation Statistics). As a work of the US government, it is in the public domain.
Real-world routes — Zenodo / OpenSky
Crowdsourced air traffic data for 2019–2022 (anonymised edition, with aircraft types) — “Crowdsourced air traffic data from The OpenSky Network”. Source: zenodo.org/records/5815448 (the OpenSky Network project). Licensed under Creative Commons Attribution (CC-BY 4.0).
